The Truth About Travel
Remember when you were young and fantasized about all the great places you wanted to see one day? Well, one day can be today once you know the truth about the travel industry. You see, travel doesn't have to be expensive.
The Ins and Outs of Airfare Deals
Lots of airlines are fighting for your travel dollar. To make sure you get the best possible airfare to any destination all year long, follow these tips:
1. Purchase tickets 14 days in advance to get a lower fare (some airlines require 21 day advance).
2. Book flights for travel on Tuesday and Wednesday (and Saturdays for some destinations), when fares are usually cheapest. Also, evening fares (after 7 p.m.) are generally cheaper than day fares.
3. If a fare war starts after you buy your tickets and you see an airfare that's cheaper, call your travel agent. You can often switch non-refundable or non-exchangeable tickets to the lower fare for a nominal fee.
Straight Talk Tip: Many airlines will reimburse you for any drop in the price of your airline ticket that occurs after you buy your ticket but before you use it. But you won't get reimbursed unless you ask. So ask the ticket agent to check the computer for the current price of your ticket to see if you are entitled to a refund.
4. Always charge your trip on a credit card so you have recourse if there is a problem with your ticket or the airline goes under.
Straight Talk Tip: We can't talk about airlines without mentioning this little-known airline freebie: You can order a special meal instead of the standard meat and potatoes. You can order everything from fruit and seafood platters to kosher meals. You usually must order your meal 24 hours in advance. And remind the agent about your meal when checking in at the airport desk.
Flight Canceled? No Problem!
The next time your flight gets canceled, follow this tip: Whatever you do, DON'T rush over to the reservation desk like the rest of the crowd. Walk away from the mob and mosey over to the nearest phone. Then call the airline's 800# and book your reservation on the next available flight. No lines. No hassle. No problem.
