I have a daughter in college and she does not qualify for a Pell grant. How can she find scholarships and other funds for school? Where should she begin?
- Sandra

Sandra, a good place to start is to make a list of potential scholarship sources based on your daughter’s academic skills or other affiliations, such as athletics or community programs. That way you can pinpoint which ones she has the best chance of qualifying for. For the types of scholarships you should look for, check out our guide to Helping Your Kids Win Scholarships.

One of our favorite sources of information on all college financing is a book written by our longtime friend Kalman Chany, Paying for College Without Going Broke, which is available on amazon.com. We also suggest visiting www.finaid.com. Good luck!

What do Chili and Hi-Def TV Have in Common?

The Super Bowl, of course!

I (Ken here) am so excited that I’m jumping out of my skin. My New England Patriots are attempting to go down in history by being the first team ever to go 19-0. This game will be watched around the world, and millions of football fans will prepare by heading out to their nearest electronics retailer in the next day or two to grab a new HDTV as sale prices lure them in for the latest technology.

In fact, it’s expected that 2.4 million HDTVs will fly out of the stores this week, moving faster than the Pats’ Randy Moss racing down the sideline to catch a Tom Brady touchdown pass.

A word of caution: if you’re tempted to join in the frenzy but already have a hefty credit card balance, don’t do it. Luxuries like this should only be purchased when you can immediately pay them off. (For more on how your money relates to the big game, check out our video Super Bowl Investing.)

Meanwhile, in the Dolan household, our biggest expense will not be an HDTV. It will be food! Our family is getting supplies in to make chili for our annual Super Bowl Sunday get-together. We heard from many of you about how much you enjoyed Daria’s meatloaf recipe, so we thought you’d enjoy my favorite chili recipe. It’s the BEST that I have ever had (and I’ve eaten a lot of chili in my day!)
