So how does this sound to you? Your monthly Social Security benefit is transferred directly to a pre-paid debit card and, presto!, the money is in your hands right away. Last week, the government announced it’s expanding the number of people who could receive their benefits this way. If you listen to the government, they’ll tell you it’s more reliable because your check is less likely to be lost or stolen. OK, we understand that. Of course, it also saves a ton of money in postage. So sign up if you're eligible, right? Not so fast! This is a classic case of solving one problem and creating another—in this case, a likely BIG problem. Here’s our advice on how to avoid a potentially serious Social Security mistake. As you may have heard, we spent last week moving from a house to a condominium. No more bug guy, lawn-mowing guy, empty rooms to keep clean, and so on. We are looking forward to just putting the key in the door and not having to worry about much else! While we love our new place, we hated the moving process. There is just so much to do, and we can’t imagine how much more painful it would have been if we weren’t organized. That’s our first lesson from the move: Get and stay organized! It’s not just for your peace of mind, either. Organization is actually the key to financial success! Now, we know getting organized isn’t much fun, so we've simplified the process for you. Follow our steps to clearing out clutter, filing important papers and taking control of your finances. Watch our Dolan Guide to Organizing Your Finances.
We know, we know! Kids are just now graduating from high school, and here we are talking college! Well, get ready. If your child or grandchild will be a junior or senior when school resumes, then you need to be thinking about college…if you’re not already doing so. Part of the whole process—now, if you want to take advantage of summer vacation, or in the fall—will involve visiting the campuses that make it to the top of your list. As they say, you only get one first impression, and we want to make sure you know exactly what to look for. After all, this is an important decision. We learned several valuable lessons when visiting colleges with our daughter, Meredith, and we want to make sure you benefit from them as well. Click here for our advice to help you make the most out of your college visit. You’ll discover 3 important areas you must ask about, and we’ll share some little-known but effective tips to help you get a true taste of life on campus. You want to know that, for sure! Sincerely,
