Survey: $5-a-Gallon Gasoline?
=Cheap Gas? Beware!

So it’s official. The national average for gasoline hit $4. The whole economy is affected by these outrageous prices, and sadly, many Americans already have to choose between buying gas or food.

We’ve told you we expect gas to hit $5 per gallon by the end of the year. What’s your opinion?

Cheap Gas? Beware!

=Cheap Gas? Beware!Have you seen the latest sales gimmick to get you to buy a car? Chrysler is offering you gas at a maximum of $2.99 a gallon for the next three years if you buy a new car. Sounds appealing, doesn’t it?

Before you pull up to the pump, put your foot on those anti-lock brakes for a moment. With car sales in the pits right now, you can expect to see plenty of other incentives as well, such as low interest rates and cash rebates.

Be sure to look into these incentives as well. If you can get a couple of thousand dollars back, it will buy you a lot of gasoline—even at $4 a gallon. Do the math to decide which is the best deal.

  Summer Travel Alert!

It’s hard for us to find the words to express just how bad airline travel is going to be this summer. We wish the news were different, but it’s the truth.

First of all, air fares are soaring. Second, airlines are cutting back on the number of routes available and staff. Continental announced that it’s trimming 3,000 jobs and cutting back its capacity by 11%. American is reducing its capacity by a similar amount, and United is cutting its number of flights by about 18%.

It’s all because of record gas and fuel prices.

Just when you thought the worst was over, think again. Airlines are also adding extra fees—sizable ones, at that!—to help them cover their spiraling fuel costs.

Some airlines have even stopped handing out that little bag containing all of nine itty-bitty pretzels!

Before you find yourself spending a lot more than you thought you were going to, click here to watch Daria’s brand new summer travel alert video. It just might be enough to make you take the train!

  Don’t Let Hospitals Overcharge You

Let me (Ken here) tell you a quick story: Last year, I had some pretty bad back pain one Sunday, and when I couldn’t sit down to eat dinner, Daria said, “That’s it. We’re going to the emergency room.”

Four hours and $9,000 later, I was told I had walking pneumonia.

That shows you just how expensive hospital visits can be.

Even though the total bill almost put me back in the hospital, it was accurate. That’s the exception rather than the rule. One study we saw found that 97% of hospital bills contained errors!

Don’t let them overcharge you one penny! Read up on the most common ways hospitals overcharge.

Time to Refinance? Get the Best Deal

With the interest rates for 30-year fixed mortgages hovering around the 6% level, it may make sense to consider refinancing your mortgage if you are carrying a higher rate or have an adjustable rate mortgage (ARM) that you want to convert to a fixed (please do!).

Here are three quick tips for getting the best deal:

  1. When shopping around, be sure to check lenders’ fees as well as interest rates. A low-interest rate loan may look very attractive, but watch out for hidden fees. A good place to start your search is www.bankrate.com.
  2. Don’t refinance with a loan that has pre-payment penalties…PERIOD.
  3. Rather than refinancing, you may want to ask the lender to modify your current loan, which means changing the terms without all the fees of new refinancing. This could save both you and the bank substantial bucks.

Be sure to use our Dolans.com calculator to help determine if refinancing makes sense for you. And for more tips on refinancing, read our complete articlePaid Content to make sure you refinance the smart way.
