How do I apply for my Social Security benefits?
Apply as soon as you are eligible. The Web site www.ssa.gov has an online benefits planner link that you can use to check out your options. You may also want to talk with a Social Security representative in the year before you plan to retire, because it may be to your advantage to start your retirement benefits before you actually stop working. You can complete the application online, by calling 800-772-1213, or by visiting or calling your local Social Security office. (Check the phone book or the Social Security Web site for locations.) Be sure to ask what documents you will need to sign up; for starters, you will need your Social Security card (or a record of your number) and your birth certificate.Want to read our answers to more of your questions?
