The Key Karats of Diamond Buying
Buying diamonds can be a scary proposition. To the untrained eye, color, cut, clarity and karats, the 4Cs of savvy diamond buying mean nothing more than another C word - confusion.
And with the cost of a good quality 1 karat diamond around $5,000, there are no little mistakes.
Follow these rules when buying diamonds:
- Confirm the stone is certified by the Gemological Institute of America or the American Gem Society, describing the 4Cs.
- Make sure you receive a receipt from the store listing all the representations made.
- Get the stone appraised by an independent gemological expert.
- Ask for and receive a 30-day guarantee that will let you return the stone for cash, not store credit.
A reputable jeweler should be happy to comply. If the jeweler balks, walk away and shop elsewhere.
When diamonds are involved, all mistakes are big ones!
