The major stock market indexes (Dow, Nasdaq and S&P 500) all finished last week at their lowest levels in five years. It's hard to believe that just last October the Dow hit its all-time high. It is down over 40 percent since then, with the S&P 500 and Nasdaq down even more. They don't apply here. The cold, hard truth is: This time it really IS different. That's why it's so important that you be smart with your money in this historic crisis. Let me (Daria here) tell you exactly why we're in uncharted territory and what you need to do now to protect your money. Click here to read this important alert. So here we are…exactly one week until Election Day. The ability to choose our government representatives is what makes this country so special (make sure you vote!), but we must also confess that we'll be glad when it's over. What's been especially frustrating this election is that the all-consuming stock market, economy and financial crises have pushed to the back burner one of the most serious issues for many Americans. People ask us about it all of the time. Here are the two most important facts: One, health care costs will continue to rise faster than inflation – almost 7% a year, according to some estimates – and take up a bigger percentage of your budget. And two, no matter which candidate is elected, don't expect any real change anytime soon (despite all of the calls for "change.") But here's the good news: You can make changes yourself to lower your health care costs. Don't wait for the politicians! Start right now with our 6 quick tips to help you slash your medical costs and hang on to more of your money.
As you stock up on candy to pass out to the little ghosts and goblins this Halloween, you may want to add a few dog treats as well. No, we're not suggesting you give dog treats to humans! We're just saying that you shouldn't be surprised if a family pet or two shows up at your door sporting a costume. According to a recent PetSmart survey, one out of every 10 pet owners put Fluffy in a costume last year. Heck, Good Housekeeping is holding its second annual Halloween Pet Costume Contest. The grand prize is a six-week stay for four at a Colorado lodge. Oh, and you can bring your pet, of course. (Click here to see some of the pictures.) We never dressed up our pets, but like many of you, the ones we've had through the years certainly became a part of our family. (We still miss our last dog, Punkin, who was a member of our family for 13 years!) As with people, pets also need medical care. With sophisticated procedures and devices being used on animals, Fido's trip to the vet is almost as expensive as your trip to the doctor. According to the American Pet Products Manufacturer's Association, we will spend about $11 billion on veterinary care this year. That's why more folks are turning to pet insurance to help pay these bills. Is that really a good idea? Here's what you need to know to make the right decision. Sincerely,
