So tell us…what did you do this past weekend?

If you’re like a lot of folks we know, you spent your time getting your taxes done. Or, if you’re like a lot of other folks we know, getting them started!

Whether you’re rounding third and headed for home or brewing the coffee for a couple of “all-nighters,” we know how easy it is to feel overwhelmed. Maybe we can help make this whole experience just a little more pleasant.

In this week’s visit, we’ve put together our top tax tips to help you get everything wrapped up—and not have to pay a penny more than necessary!

We suggest you start by watching (or re-watching) this special video full of our suggestions to help you get organized and get those forms in properly.

You’ll discover the two most common mistakes people make—so you can avoid them and not have to go back and correct your returns later. We know you don’t want to do that! And we’ll also tell you about a widespread scam that you need to stay as far away from as possible.

So no matter what stage of tax preparation or filing you’re in, click here to see our 7 Simple Tax Moves for 2008.

The name of the game when filing your taxes is to pay only what you owe, and not a penny more!

Unfortunately, it’s not that simple when the U.S. tax code is more than 9,000 pages long. Yes, more than 9,000 pages! Are you kidding?

We can’t help you find every single tax deduction in there, but we can help make sure you don’t miss out on some of the most commonly overlooked ones.

Here’s the Dolan Dozen: twelve often overlooked deductions.

  Your Tax Rebate

Perhaps the biggest incentive of all to get your taxes done is that no matter whether you owe the government money or are getting a refund, almost all of us will receive a “rebate” as part of the economic stimulus plan passed earlier this year.

Hey, we’ll take it!

The government hopes that you’ll rush out and spend this newfound money to stimulate the sluggish economy. Hmmm. We have a few problems with that whole theory.

We want you to be smart about what you do with this money. We believe you have a real opportunity to do something with it that can better your life, and we want to show you exactly how to do that.

Click here for our 6 smart (and meaningful) ways to “spend” your tax rebate.

And good luck with those taxes!

Dolan Tax Tip

Many income tax refunds are still in the hands of the IRS, not the taxpayers to whom the money is owed. The reason is that people move, or the IRS has outdated or incorrect addresses and the refund checks have been returned as “undeliverable.”

If you think the IRS owes you money, take steps to get it back. Here’s what to do:

Go to www.irs.gov. On the homepage, there’s a link titled, “Where’s My Refund?” under the heading “online tools.” You’ll need your Social Security number, your filing status and the refund amount exactly as it’s shown on your tax return. Otherwise the IRS’ computer system can’t retrieve your data.

If you don’t have access to the Internet, call the IRS at
1-800-828-1040.

Dolan's Tax Tip

The IRS grants everyone an automatic “standard deduction” on your taxes. For many of us, however, actually itemizing and totaling our legitimate deductions saves us more than the standard amount given by the government.
