Step 6: Start at a Community College
Having your child attend a community college for two years and then transfer to a four-year college or university could save you a trunk load in tuition.
Community colleges usually cost less than half of what their neighboring public universities cost. They also offer smaller, more intimate classes (that are easier for recently graduated high-schoolers to adjust to) and when accredited, offer easy-to-transfer credits.
For the 2007-2008 school year, the average cost for a full year of tuition and fees at a community college (not including room and board since most community college students live with parents) was just $2,360... Now that’s something to smile about!
