Having Your New Car Repaired

Once you've found a dealer that has a good service reputation, here are five things you can do to get satisfaction when you're having a new car repaired:

  1. Get a detailed description in writing of the work that is being performed on your car.

  2. If a part needs to be replaced, ask in advance to be given the old part back and for the box that the new part came in.

  3. Don't pay until you take a road test with the mechanic to make sure the problem was corrected.

  4. Pay for the repair with your credit card. If you have a dispute, you can get resolution through the credit card company.

  5. Keep all your receipts and detailed repair orders.

Child Savings Accounts

When opening a savings account for your child, make sure their Social Security number is used as the account's tax identification number. That way, as long as your child is under age 14, interest earned will be taxed at your child's lower tax rate, not at your tax rate. This rule holds true as long as your child earns less than $1,300 a year in interest.
