Why You Should Negotiate the Little Stuff When Buying a Car
The cost of buying a new car is rising again and you can't blame the dealer without also blaming your state government.
States are passing laws that will allow dealers to raise the fees for preparing and processing the paperwork involved in buying a car, as well as raising fees for registration, title and license plates.
If your state doesn't set any cap on fees, this could cost you as much as $900 or more. So negotiate as hard as you can.
Some fees that you can negotiate are:
- Documentary fees
- Vehicle prep fees which include inspection and cleaning
- Financing markups which are charges for handling the finance for you. These can be as much as 3% of the loan
- And extras, like extended warranties and accessories. Dealers often double the cost of these
You have the right to negotiate all of these charges. If the dealer refuses to negotiate, walk away and find another dealer.
