President Obama's Personal Finance Summit: Giving Credit When Credit Is Due

As a member of the Dolans.com family, you are well aware that we have been critical of some of President Obama's policies and initiatives...as we have been critical of other DC "players" who got us into this mess and keep making thing worse.

But we are nothing if not fair.  And we want to commend President Obama on his Personal Finance Online Summit at the White House yesterday.  The President and participants discussed a number of important topics including household budgets and planning for retirement.

We are disappointed that the national media, predictably, was far more concerned with Rep. Weiner's anatomy than this critical, timely initiative.

For more than 20 years, we have been screaming from the rooftops that we MUST become much more financially literate, especially during the especially challenging time in which we now find ourselves so that we can make intelligent personal financial decisions for ourselves and our families such as planning for college, a secure retirement, etc.

We are pleased that President Obama agrees with two of our most important core beliefs...the needs for personal finance education and personal responsibility!

Specifically, during this summit, President Obama stated his #1 personal finance tip, "Don't spend all your money," - a lesson he learned from his grandmother!  Simple, but brilliant advice.

He also stressed that investing is different from spending...that some wise debt can be beneficial...and that it's timely to check your family's budget for any potential for savings.

We commend President Obama for yesterday's Personal Finance Online Summit and hope that it is the first step toward his administration's commitment to an effective and comprehensive personal finance educational process.

And as always, we are here every day to help you spend less, invest wisely and reduce your debt

It doesn't matter too much on who created the debt, if you really want to get to the nitty gritty, it was the Reagan Bush administration who put us in this God forsaken mess the whole country is in. I am sure if not positive Joani is a Republican and can pretty much guess who she voted for; the same men who put us in this crap pile mess that President Obama is trying to get us out of. You have to spend money to make it better; and you will have to create a crap pile of debt to get there. This was mess was created in a matter of years and it will take more than one term for our economy to turn it around. As for the White house finances, once again, look to the former Presidents who sat there first. Ah hem, it was 90 percent Republican who tore this country apart and it will take more than one term to clean it up...wake up America, time to take responsibility for the men we vote into the White House. Take responsibility for your own actions. You get what you voted for...want more like the last 15 years. Vote Republican. Stop whining and do something about it.

Ladies & Gentlemen, we try to blame others to take the blame from ourselves. Each week we go out and buy things that we don't need. We want them so we don't ask ourselves "Do I really need this"? If we cut back, then the government will cut back.

Christmas is coming and we don't look back at what we spent the previous year. Have dinners where everyone brings something. We stand in line on Black Friday and buy toys that our children have destroyed or we have given away to make room for more. Yes, there is waste going on with our government, but we also do waste and our own children see it from us.

How many of us buy things every time we take our children to the store? Please folks, it is time for us to see our own mistakes. Our parents never spent the money, we are now spending today. We are the ones who are receiving calls from the credit card companies not our parents and it is our generation of children who use you and anyone else to get what they want.

If we all took a certain day of the month, which we didn't spend money, everyone else would follow you to do the same (including the government).
