Daria, I couldn't agree with you more that the current jobs report offers a dismal outlook for growth and further solidifies the possibility that the economy is stalling out. As a government worker, I am familiar too with frozen wages, cutbacks, and furlough days. The only thing I have to disagree with is the "over-regulation" of private sector businesses. Over the last 10 years, I have seen no change in the management mentality towards its workers. Simply put, in both public and private sector, it has been a "if you dont like it, theres the door" concept for well over a decade. This, compounded with profit over productivity or improvement of work conditions has contributed to our current state of affairs. When companies make shoddy products, disregard regulations, and excercise wanton disregard the backlash is further regulation. Self governance doesnt work....simply put, the fox cant guard the henhouse. There has to be a balance, and when business, both public and private demonstrates a willingness to obey and play by the rules, then I might be inclined to relax regulations. Until then, they've created the soup they are in, so why shouldn't they feel the pain too. Thats the elephant in the room that doesnt get talked about. They've gotten their economic relief through TARP etc. Now it is time for the common man to get some.
Disappointing Job Numbers Spell Trouble for Economy
Just in... disappointing job numbers!
Well, you can't blame it on the weather.
That's the only piece of sunshine that came out of this morning's jobs report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
The "green shoots" of economic recovery have developed root rot as we find that the number of jobs created was anemic and -- if it wasn't so serious -- the laughable creation of a scant 54,000 new jobs raised the unemployment rate to 9.1%.
This is NO way to run an economy, nor is it any way to kick off the start of a second-term campaign.
I'm sure the Republican candidates for president will have a field day with this today!
The Main Stream Media is going to have to bend themselves in two to paint a rosy scenario for the ongoing jobs debacle.
But, at the end of the day, there is no way to color this as a positive move.
A lack of leadership and over-regulation of private sector businesses continues to grow the mess we're in and there's no let-up in sight coming from the current administration.
So, if you're currently employed don't rest on your laurels.
Make yourself as indispensable as possible. Add new skills and take on extra responsibilities.
The next tornado we would like to see is at the ballot box in November 2012!
