The Turkeys Have Landed--Healthcare Reform Moves Through Congress
Just in time for Thanksgiving, the House and Senate have served up Thanksgiving turkeys for the American people in their health care reform proposals.
The House "turkey" weighs in at slightly less than 2000 pages while the Senate's tips the scale at 2042.
Boy, are we going to have massive indigestion with these birds!
Both birds come stuffed with chestnuts including the promise of not cutting Medicare while stripping almost half a trillion dollars from that program. That promise must be the new "I voted for it before I voted against it" strain of chestnuts being cultivated in Foggy Bottom these days
The sweet potatoes come with promises that these new entitlement programs will LOWER the deficit rather than add to it and the marshmallows on top are chock full of promises of money for certain members of Congress who were inclined not to partake of the dish.
But the best part of this Thanksgiving dinner can be found in the cranberry sauce, tart new taxes that will take a bite out of working stiffs and the small businesses that employ them.
Still in all, we Americans have a lot to be thankful for with this holiday buffet.
Here's what we should all be thankful for:
After setting the table with all this abundance, Congressional members are headed home to We the People who elected them, giving all concerned voters one last chance to let them know just how much we "love" this takeover of our lives and freedoms. You can serve this with or without whipped cream.
After swearing that nothing will change for those of us already insured, a government panel of doctors jumped the gun and let all the women in America know just how unimportant we are by "suggesting" mammograms and pap smears are no longer so important. Thank God for loose lips. You can serve this with a big shot of wry.
After promising that new health care reform will come courtesy of Uncle Sam, these proposals will dump most of the uninsured onto state Medicaid rolls. We're thankful for advance knowledge of this quick fiscal weight loss. You never serve gravy with this dish.
This is it folks, our last chance to remind the "chefs" who's paying for the meal.
In between basting the turkey, take a moment to contact your representative and give a little "basting" to him or her.
Instead of remaking one sixth of the economy, which we can't afford AT ALL, remind your representative that JOB CREATION is the meal they should be cooking this year.
Nevertheless, we do wish you a Happy Thanksgiving and remind you to look for all the little blessings in your lives this Thursday. Those little blessings might just be gathered around your table. We know ours are.
