If I were a banker, I'd be sweating right now.

Lots and lots of news about banks over the last week or two and none of it is good. From more bank failures to the FDIC running out of money to Congress threatening to crack down on bank overdraft fees...and as if that wasn't enough, a report out today that banks are charging customers record bank fees.

A survey by Bankrate.com shows that ATM charges rose for the third straight year. Consumers now pay and average of $3.54 to use another bank's ATM.

On top of that, consumers are paying a record $12.55 a month for an interest bearing checking account. $150 a year! With the measly interest rates most banks pay on basic checking, it's probably costing you more money than you are making in interest!

And of course, we've already told you about the record high overdraft fees.

So, we have to ask, are banks stupid? I can hear the drumbeat for a bank crackdown getting louder every day, can't you?

Four big banks already announced changes to their overdraft fees and policies last week, but that's not enough. It's only a matter of time before Congress hauls bankers to the Hill for hearings.

But we're not going to just lay the blame at bankers' feet or wait for the government (ha!) to fix this for you...
