The U.S. economy is playing Scrooge AGAIN this year. With a true unemployment rate in the double digits, anemic economic growth, rising inflation and no wage increases, times are still very tight for many Americans.
And that means tighter budgets this holiday season.
But you as you gather with friends and family over the holidays, you can still have plenty of fun without breaking your budget!
Here are six simple ways to spend quality time together that won’t cost you a fortune…
- Check with your local chamber of commerce. Find out what’s going on for kids in your area. Book readings, crafts workshops and indoor/outdoor games are just a few things we’ve done.
- Also check your local mall. Sometimes they have special activities with Santa and his elves other than just picture taking.
- Libraries also often have free activities for kids, especially around the holidays.
- Here’s an idea that will cost you just a little bit of gas money: Pile everyone in the car, and drive around to see all the Christmas lights people put up!
- One way to involve kids in the spirit of giving is to let them pick out a toy from Target or Wal-Mart (it doesn’t have to be expensive!) to give to your local toy drive. Toys for Tots is a popular fundraiser that gives new toys to under-privileged children around the country.
Another totally free way to share in the spirit of giving (and a practice we absolutely support) is if your children are getting new toys this year, let them pick out a toy they no longer play with. As long as it’s in good working condition, you can donate it to your local Goodwill or Salvation Army. - Have the whole family volunteer at a food bank, or serve food at a shelter. Helping others with your time is a free and much appreciated way to remember the reason for the season.
The holidays are a time to get together with family an d friends and count our blessings. It doesn’t have to cost a lot of money to do that.
