How to Lower Your Stress When Traveling
- Check alternative airports. They usually have less traffic than at major airports, especially during the holidays. It will like be easier and cheaper for you.
- Pack as light as possible. It happens every time, right? You take a trip and come back telling yourself, "Next time I'm not going to take so much." Now is the time to make good on that resolution. Not only will it save you money (many airlines charge "baggage fees" nowadays), but it will also be much less hassle.
- Keep your airline's 800 number handy. In fact, it's also a good idea to have other airlines' numbers handy, too. If your flight is cancelled, do not get in that long line at the ticket counter for re-booking. Instead, get on your cell phone and call your airline. You'll get a seat on a new flight MUCH quicker.
- Clearly mark your checked luggage. Many bags look the same! You don't want someone walking off with your luggage; nor do you want to open your suitcase and find the wrong size pants awaiting you.
- Traveling with kids? Always prepare for the unexpected. Bring games and extra food in case you run into travel trouble. The airlines are bad enough at getting their flights off on time, but we're also in that time of year where winter weather can affect flights.
- Dolan Straight Talk Tip: A Nifty Upgrade Trick. Increase the chance of using those hard-to-redeem "frequent flier" upgrades by taking a look at the airlines own seating maps! Several websites (including www.expedia.com and www.biztravel.com) now show exactly how many seats are empty on flights. That's very useful if you're trying to figure out when to redeem frequent-flier miles for flights or upgrades to first or business class.
- Reserve your parking spot. Some airports will let you do this. If you know you'll need a long-term parking spot during the holidays, check with your airport to see if you can reserve it in advance.
- Don't wrap! Here's an important reminder in this age of high security at airports: Do not carry wrapped gifts because it's possible that a TSA agent may have an unwrapping party at your expense! Check any wrapped gifts or wait to wrap them at your destination.
- Connecting flights? If so, try to make the connection as close to your final destination as possible. That way, if there is a problem with that connection, you might be able to rent a car and finish the trip!
