This may be hard to believe for our younger readers, but not many years ago, only the wealthy carried cell phones. Do you remember those huge phones that almost had to be held with two hands? Not only were they clunky, they were also very expensive!
Now it seems that every man, woman and even child has a cell phone. They have become practically an extension of your personality, coming in all colors and sizes with different features…and certainly different calling plans.
Of course, a cell phone is much more than a phone. You can receive instant messages, video, music, driving directions, TV and radio shows, coupons for discounts at restaurants and stores that you choose in your local business area...oh yeah, and even phone calls!
I (this is Ken) have to be honest with you: I am a Blackberry addict! If I'm awake, my Blackberry is in my belt holster. It helps me keep track of the latest news (even if I'm away from my desktop computer) and communicate by e-mail.
All of these bells and whistles are pretty cool, we admit, but they can also lead to that dreaded cell phone sticker shock. A number of our national radio show listeners have recently called us, appalled at the size of their cell phone bills.
In these tough economic times when every penny counts, we don't want you paying one extra cent on your cell phone bill. It's not that hard to do but does take some effort.
So, whether you currently have a cell phone and a calling plan or are looking for one, let's get you saving right away.
Pick the Right Plan for You
If you look at the TV commercials or ads in magazines, newspapers and on the Internet, you would think every kind of cell phone and plan is very affordable. Be wary of the price quoted. Advertisements usually don't include all surcharges, taxes and fees that the provider may try to sneak past you, and you could end up paying 20% or 30% more than the advertised price. (We'll talk more about fees in just a moment.)
Family plans are popular these days and could make good financial sense for you. They do make it easier for you to stay in touch with loved ones, but (there's always a "but") be careful when you sign up. You may face separate activation charges and termination fees for each family member's phone.
