If you've shopped for groceries lately or stopped at a gas station to fill up your tank, we'll bet you're thinking that the recession, triggered by the continuing sub-prime mortgage mess, will force you and your family to take a "sub-prime" vacation.
Or, worse yet, you'll be spending your vacation in the backyard standing over a hot barbecue grilling cheap cuts of meat while your children run through the sprinkler pretending they're on a beach in Cape Cod.
Well, we won't lie to you…it does cost more to go on vacation right now. But, there are ways to enjoy a getaway without spending a fortune.
We want to share with you some simple steps that will guarantee that you'll be able to enjoy a nice vacation without wondering how you'll ever pay for it. These tips will leave your neighbors wondering if you won the lottery or inherited a lot of money from a rich uncle. (Of course, that's one way to do it, too!)
Hit the Road, Jack
Sit down with your family and make a list of all the attractions from state parks to small towns within a three-hour drive from your home that you always meant to see and never got around to seeing. We all have lists of places close to home that we never seem to get to that won't cost an utter fortune. It's about time we all explored our own backyards. You can do day trips like this at limited cost.
Our daughter, Meredith, and our son-in-law, Keith, are great local adventurers. We hate to admit it, but they've actually seen more of the attractions in our area than we ever have - and they've lived in our area for only a couple of years! In fact, they recently bought passes for $20 each that will allow them entrance to all the botanical gardens in two counties for one year. Terrific idea!
Every weekend finds them somewhere they've never been before, taking photographs and unwinding from a week of work. As they said to us the other day, these passes make them feel like they're on a vacation every time they venture out.
They leave early in the morning to avoid traffic and conserve gas.
Now we know what you're saying: "With what the price of gas, even local exploration vacations could bust my budget!" So here are some easy ways to help you save gas:
- Before backing out of your driveway with kids and luggage in tow, have a mechanic check your car to be sure it's working properly, including inflating your tires to the recommended pressure.
- If you're going to carry luggage, pack lightly. Chances are you don't need half the stuff you take anyway, and the more weight the car has to bear the less efficient the gas mileage.
- When you hit the highway, don't speed! Yes, we all want to get to where we're going as fast as we can, but it will cost you. Your car uses 20% more fuel at 65 miles an hour then at 55.
- If you can, avoid using roof racks for luggage. Anything on top of your car creates more drag and, consequently, burns more fuel.
