A common question we get around the holidays is, "How much should you tip those who provide a service during the year?" This is an important one because you don't want to over-pay, but if you're too stingy, it could affect the quality of service you receive next year. (Boy, could we tell you some stories!) We'll give you appropriate guidelines to follow for determining the right tip amount that won't leave you looking like Ebenezer Scrooge!

$25.00 ($50.00 actually, as I live in NYC) for the Sanitation. Is this per person? There are two. Then there are the recycle truck Sanitation workers. So now I'm up to either $100.00 or $200.00. Wow! This is almost more than my Christmas shopping list, and it doesn't even take into account the mail carrier or the twice a month cleaning lady. One needs to work for a month just to cover the cost of tipping! If I had ever worked at a job where I had gotten any sort of Christmas bonus (no Christmas bonus for social service workers, just low pay), I could use the bonus for Christmas tips.

Man I must be poor! Is that just holiday tipping or regular also? I just go to a chain haircutter and only tip a buck or two!
