The best auto insurance policies will save you money without sacrificing coverage, and we've got some three questions you must ask your agent to help you find the best policy.
First, as with any insurance, you want to get quotes from two to three insurance companies, either online or over the phone. (Start with your current company, and then move on to direct writers that are often cheaper, such as Geico, State Farm and USAA.)
We actually prefer the phone because then you can be sure you're getting a quote on the exact coverage you're looking for, and you can get all of your questions answered. In this case, that's extremely important because you need to ask these three questions to make sure you're not overpaying for the coverage you're getting:
1. What's your "forgiveness" quotient? This includes the "claims cost ceiling" - the dollar amount that the company uses to determine when they will raise your premiums. For instance, some companies will raise your premium as much as 30% if you file a claim in excess of just $400. Stick with companies that have high claim ceilings of $2,000 or more.
Also ask about their policy for raising your premiums if you get a ticket. Don't go with any company that will increase your premiums after just one speeding ticket or moving violation (which almost all of us get at some point in our lives!). You shouldn't have to pay higher premiums for one mistake.
2. How much will I save by increasing my deductible from $100 to $500? You may be able to cut 35% off your premium by upping your deductible. Take the highest deductible you can afford and set aside the money you save on premiums in a savings account (where it's earning interest!) so it's available if you need it.
3. What additional discounts am I entitled to? You can slash your insurance costs with discounts for a safe driving record, safety devices (such as anti-lock brakes, airbags, etc.), anti-theft devices, driver-ed training, multiple vehicles and multiple policies.
Dolan Smart Money Move: Before you go out and buy a new car, ask your insurance agent: "What's the difference in collision and comprehensive premiums for different cars I'm considering?" You could get another 25% knocked off your bill if the car you drive is on the list of cars that are least likely to be stolen and cheapest to repair!
