Do you feel out of control when dealing with a car salesman? If so, you're not alone.
We're here to tell you that you can take back control and it's a lot easier than you might think – although you'll need to practice a little discipline!
Here are three strategies you can put to work right away to let the salesman know he's there to serve you and not the other way around:
Strategy #1: Keep your enthusiasm to yourself.
We've said this before and we'll repeat it here: Never let on when you really, really like a car. Once the salesman sees you drooling over that nice, shiny new (or used) car, he's got you right where he wants you. If you've got a poker face, use it!
Strategy #2: Three magic words.
This is one of our favorite tips. There are three magic words you should use before you even start serious negotiations with a car dealer that will change everything.
When the salesman starts talking about the price and the payment terms, whether you're looking at a loan or a lease, you say:
"Quote it clean!"
Our friend Kurt Allen Weiss, who was in the auto sales industry for 20 years and has since spent his time exposing dealer secrets, says this will floor the salesman (or saleswoman). "I've almost never seen a salesman quote a clean payment without being urged," Weiss says.
