Starting Your Own Charity

Just because you don't have $30 billion lying around like Warren Buffett to start a charitable foundation, but you can start your own with as little as $10,000.

There are donor advised funds offered by some mutual fund companies that will act as your own charity and much of the administration and management duties are taken on by the fund company.

The three big ones are the Vanguard Charitable Endowment Program, Fidelity Charitable Gift Fund and the Schwab Fund for Charitable Giving.

You donate the money, take an immediate charitable tax deduction and voila, you have a charity with your very own name on it.

You recommend which charities you want to receive money, how much and when they will receive it. You can also dictate how your money is invested. Vanguard has 6 investment choice, Schwab 8, and Fidelity 11.

You can start your charity with either cash or securities.

So go ahead and act like Buffett or Bill Gates.

It's a gift that will keep on giving.
