Remember the line on your insurance, IRA, 401(k) or annuity form that asked you to name your beneficiary? If you opened an account a long time ago, you might not even remember who you named.
But the birth of a child, divorce, remarriage or death could leave your estate in a mess when you're no longer around. So it is imperative that you revisit all financial accounts to see who is the beneficiary. And, if necessary, make the appropriate changes now.
While you're at it, look at you tax situation to be sure your heirs receive as much of your estate as they can.
In the case of IRAs, for example, naming your child as the beneficiary could stretch out the number of years for distribution. Naming your spouse would most likely increase taxes and shorten the life of the IRA.
Just like your home and your car, your financial accounts need periodic maintenance, too. So check your designated beneficiaries today.
