If you're planning on renting a car for business or pleasure, know that the quote you receive on the cost of the rental is only the tip of the iceberg. That rental car is going to cost you more, maybe a lot more.
State and local governments have discovered it's easier to pay for local civic projects by taxing out-of-towners who don't vote and can't object.
Enterprise Rent-a-Car estimates that roughly 80 special car rental fees have been imposed around the country with 44 more pending. This doesn't include airport fees.
In Florida, for example, a three-day base rate of $132 can be 28% more expensive due to sales tax, a state surcharge of $2 a day and other rental fees.
So be prepared. The rental car industry is joining forces to fight this new "taxation without representation." But, in the meantime, pack extra cash.
