If you have a debit card in your wallet, and more Americans do, you need to be even more careful than credit card users. You're at greater financial risk because debit cards have less legal protection in the event of a loss or a scam.
When using a debit card, keep an eye on it at gas stations and restaurants where many skimmer crimes occur. The information on your card could be skimmed off and used to empty your bank account before you're even aware of it, leading to bounced checks, late fees and more.
Before using an ATM at a convenience store or any unbranded ATM or card reader, check it out. Tape or loose connections could mean a skimmer is waiting for you. In fact, unbranded ATM's are dangerous for anyone.
Try planning ahead when you think you'll need some extra cash. Or make a trip to your bank or one of its branches rather than a local convenience store.
Debit cards scams are on the rise - don't be the next victim!
