Before you shop for children's toys this holiday season, remember to put safety at the top of your list. Each year the list of recalls for unsafe toys shows that no manufacturer goes unnamed.
- Follow the age guidelines on toy packaging. No matter how bright that two year old of yours is, if a toy has small parts, something will go in his mouth and could choke him.
- Keep toys for children of different ages separate and instruct older children on which toys may not be shared with younger siblings.
- Look for a marking that toys meet voluntary industry safety standards.
- Riding toys are associated with more injuries than any other toys. About 81,000 children under the age of 14 were treated in hospital ER's for trampoline injuries. These toys should not be used by anyone under the age of 16.
