Stepping Up Scrutiny of Scammers

We've talked before about the financial products most often used in fraud of investors 50 and older.

Now I want to tell you how scammers can target you.

Free-meal seminars held in hotels, country clubs and community centers are booming, and the SEC and NASD are stepping up scrutiny.

The products pitched at these socials may be legitimate products, but they are not as a one size-fits-all.

Be particularly careful about giving organizers details about your finances and contact information.

The speakers usually follow up the seminar with high pressure sales, often in your home, trying to persuade you to buy a high-cost, high-commission annuity or a living trust.

In some cases, some part of your meal might very well have been paid for by the company whose product is being pitched. Not always the best way to go.

Hold on to your personal information until you've checked out the person you are interested in dealing with.
