Do you think you're paying too much for car insurance? And, do you have a teenager in the family? Well then in the words of Al Jolson, "You ain't seen nothing yet!"

Adding a teenage boy to your policy will, on average, double its cost. A girl will increase it about 50%, according to the Insurance Information Institute.

So here's how to lessen the blow and find a low-cost insurance quotation.

  1. Look for an insurer that offers discounts if your teen takes a special driver's safety course, and then sign him or her up for it.
  2. If you have more than one car, assign Junior to the one that's the cheapest to insure.
  3. Consider cutting down the amount of collision and comprehensive coverage on the car which could knock 40% or so off a bill.

And if Junior is going off to college without a car, inform your insurance company so they can put the student on hold.

You can't Junior off the road, but you can lessen the financial impact.
